The split screen VAVA monitor is neatly packaged. The quick start guide, user guide and warranty extension come in an envelope at the top of the box; the two cameras and the monitor nestle in padding underneath, with the plug and cables in a small cardboard box at the bottom.

Getting this monitor out of the box and figuring out what plugs in where is simple, as it should be – considering you may already be in the throes of chronic sleep deprivation when you unpack it.

Design and build

The conical cameras feel sturdy. There’s a good weight to their bases, and each one stands on a rubberised ring, so they aren’t going to skate across a surface if you accidentally nudge them with your elbow.

That said, the cameras don’t come with a manipulable spider claw or snake that you can use to attach to an unconventional surface (although you can buy a compatible one for $19.99), such as a cot top rail, nor do they come with wall fittings included. However, each camera does have a mounting hole in the base and the manual shows you how to properly attach a camera to a wall.

Bear in mind that the cameras need to be plugged in at all times: they don’t have a chargeable battery. Each camera has white housing that clasps a black camera orb, an on/off power slider, and comes with a 192cm cable.

This length is great for a chest of drawers a foot or two to the side of a power vava split screen baby monitor reviews, or the top of an infant’s wardrobe (around 137cm), and will even reach the top of an IKEA Kallax shelving unit (147cm high) as long as the plug socket is directly behind the unit. There’s a power button on the top and a charge socket on the left side. The power cable is a 150cm long USB-C, so it’s workable in all manner of viewing situations.  

Obviously, you need to charge the monitor before going cordless (VAVA says the total charge time is eight hours, and this seemed accurate to us), but you can set up the system as soon as you plug the monitor into a power socket.

Setup

The setup process really is the moment of truth for any baby monitor system: does everything connect quickly and easily?

I have to say I was impressed. I expected to fiddle with settings and menus to connect two cameras to the monitor, and possibly run through a pairing cycle for the second camera twice, but one camera comes factory paired to the monitor out of the box, and the other connected immediately. When I turned on the monitor, both feeds were there in an instantaneous split screen.

Display

You get a 5″ HD720p display, and it gives you vibrant colours and excellent detail across a viewing angle of 1.5 metres vertically and 1.4 metres horizontally. You also have eight brightness levels, so you can adjust the picture to work with the atmospheric light in the room.

Furthermore, the pan-and-tilt capability has excellent range for tracking down errant tots. You can remotely adjust either camera 108 degrees vertically and 270 degrees horizontally from the monitor controls, so the only thing you can’t see is the 90 degrees directly behind the camera, the floor directly below and the ceiling directly above.

The zoom feature is also pretty good. The camera magnifies 4x, although you do lose detail the closer you zoom in, but, as you can see from the images below (which show full screen, 2x zoom, 4x zoom and night vision), the image at 4x is just somewhat lossy – it’s not as though your infant becomes a pixelated blur.

The only flaw is that it’s tricky to initially figure out how to pan, tilt and zoom each individual camera. When the monitor initially connects and turns into a split screen of both live feeds, it’s not immediately obvious how you select each feed and then pan, tilt or zoom that particular camera.

This issue is compounded by the fact the menu structure on the screen is a bit confusing.

It turns out that you use the arrow keys and okay button to select a feed from the split screen, which then takes you into the screen feed for that camera. Then you can use the arrow keys to pan-and-tilt and zoom, pressing the menu button again to go back to split screen.

But it is a bit of a steep learning curve and took me about five minutes or more to figure out – not something you’ll be able to do if you have a child crying in your ear.

The monitor automatically turns to black-and-white night vision when it detects the light in the room dip, and, again, the images are excellent, although it is worth flagging up that when you zoom 4x in night vision, the resulting view can be a bit eerie.

The monitor also shows the temperature of each camera room (you can switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius through the settings menu), the current time (which you set yourself through the menu), which vava split screen baby monitor reviews are currently streaming to the monitor, the battery level, the signal strength, and the sound level.

VAVA also suggests you get 18 hours of battery life from a fully charged battery if the screen is off, and we found this to be reasonably accurate.

Two-way audio

You have seven speaker volume levels, with 0 being mute. The highest volume level, I found, picked up voices from the living room downstairs, so the microphone in the cameras must be pretty sensitive. You can also change the global system volume settings through the menu.

The talk back feature is not instantaneous; there’s a delay of about a second before it kicks in in full screen and a delay of about two seconds for the split screen.

There’s no lullaby mode with this monitor, so it won’t play melodies or atmospheric noises, but it’s debatable how much value those types of features add, particularly if the playable sound quality is not great. Settings

You can set an alarm for two, four or six hours, or specify a precise time through the alarm menu option. The alarm itself is a series of five beeps that repeat in sequence; it isn’t offensive and doesn’t set your nerves jangling.

You can also change the automatic screen sleep time from one minute to two or five minutes, or turn it off entirely. 

It’s important to note that you can’t take snapshots or record video with this system, but it’s worth considering whether you really need this feature, considering the sheer volume of image and video data you’re likely to accrue over the first few years of your child’s life.   

Also, this system doesn’t track breathing, baby temperature, rollovers, or sleep trends in real time, nor room humidity, nor can you plug a smart sock into it. For that kind of facility, you might want to look at the Owlet Smart Sock baby monitor. 

Range and signal strength

The VAVA Split Screen Baby Monitor is not Wi-Fi-enabled, so you can’t stream feeds to your smart phone.

What you get with the VAVA is a private connection between camera and monitor where signals are digitally transferred in the 2.4 GHz frequency with FHSS technology. This means your system is virtually impossible to hack and you don’t have to depend on your router for video feeds to the monitor.

We’ve found that you can’t necessarily guarantee consistency of video feeds with Wi-Fi enabled monitors, vava split screen baby monitor reviews images can sometimes lag, buffer or lose quality.

VAVA says that the operational range of its system is up to 280m to 300 metres without obstacles. However, in our test, in a UK stone built, semi-detached house, we had a range of only 30 metres (98 feet) from the cameras to the monitor before the picture cut out.

If you live in or around properties that are older and built of more traditional materials (thick stone external walls and internal brick walls, rather than brick external walls and plasterboard partitions), it may inhibit range – but this will be a problem with many monitors.

Verdict

A split screen baby monitor is a game changer, and extends the life of a system beyond the cot years. If you have twins, or two under-fives in separate rooms, or a pre-schooler with both bedroom and playroom access, a split screen monitor is a phenomenally good idea. Considering most American families have two kids—technically, it's an average of 1.94 children under the age of 18 in 2022—there’s cause to believe that young families can benefit from more than one baby monitor. Problem is, video baby monitors are expensive, and not everyone can afford to buy a second one.

You also risk wireless interference, and even if there isn't an issue with the signal, you'll need to have two screens to look at, which takes up twice the space.

As such, we were eager to take a look at the Vava Baby Monitor with Split Screen (available at VAVA) which includes two separate cameras, to keep an eye on two rooms at the same time, on the same display. By default, it's a horizontal split-screen view of each, with audio, but you can select one camera to be full-screen, if desired.

Given how many millions of families have two small children to keep an eye on, we think this is a pragmatic product to review for parents, guardians, and babysitters alike.

While not perfect, and not the least expensive dual-camera solution on the market, this baby monitor managed to impress.

What we like 

The monitor is super easy to set up

Many products claim to be "plug and play," but the Vava Baby Monitor with Split Screen couldn't be any easier.

Simply plug the monitor into an AC outlet—with the provided USB-C cable and power adaptor (plug)—to charge up the monitor's integrated 4500mAh battery. The cameras then plug into the wall. Flick the switch of each camera to "On" and instantly you'll see the image from both cameras on the monitor.

Video quality is crisp and colorful (and with autofocus), especially when the room is bright, while a black-and-white night mode automatically kicks in when the lights are off.

There's no way to properly test the "hack free" claim by Vava, but the company says it utilizes an encrypted FHSS (frequency hopping spread spectrum) radio signal, where the risks are very low for any security breach (not to mention it's not on your Wi-Fi, so not susceptible to any vulnerabilities there).

Battery life is really good

As promised, the Vava baby monitor lasts a long time between charges.

In our testing, it lasted 22 hours of vava split screen baby monitor reviews operation, with a mix of video and audio. By our estimation, it was about 10 hours on video, in total, but we kept the microphones on the entire time, which lasted roughly 12 hours.

This is in line with Vava's estimation of up to 10 hours of video or up to 18 hours in audio only mode (though the Amazon page for the same product says up to 12 hours of video and up to 24 hours in audio-only mode).

Splitting hairs, perhaps, but parents won't be disappointed with the battery life. And some may keep the monitor plugged in all the time, anyway.

The monitor has an intuitive interface

Open the kickstand on the back of the monitor to prop it up on a table, desk, kitchen counter or bookshelf. Then raise the antenna on top of the unit.

The interface for the Vava monitor is quite intuitive. A button on top, near the antenna, lets you toggle between On, Off, and Sleep mode.

To the right of the 5-inch color screen are a few more large buttons: - Menu: To adjust brightness, camera selection, add more cameras, set timer, dragon face xray and vav settings, and more. In other modes, this Menu serves as a "back" button (to return to the previous screen) - Zoom: When one camera is highlighted on the screen, press Zoom once for a 2x zoom and again for 4x zoom. A third press returns to the normal view. - Talk: As you'd expect, this button is to chat with your toddler or to your baby, and you can increase or decrease volume, too - Since it's not a touchscreen, a four-way navigation button is also on the front of the monitor, to move the cursor around (or pan/tilt the image), along with an vave-l1-1h2-lr (Enter) button in the middle to confirm your selection.

What we don't like

Its range isn't the best

While Vava claims the monitor transmits audio and video up to 900 meters (about 275 meters) away from the cameras—which is comparable to other dual-camera split-screen baby monitors sold today—it fell short in this department during our testing.

While the shape and material of your home will impact performance, we only got about 800 or so vava split screen baby monitor reviews before losing the connection. We made sure the antenna was upright on both the cameras and the baby monitor.

On a warm summer evening, we took the Vava review of vava robot vacuum 1300 to a front porch, but alas, the signal dropped even though we weren't too far from the cameras.

Therefore, those in larger homes might pass on this unit, unless the nursery or kids room is somewhat close to the monitor.

It lacks some features

At $250, this Vava baby monitor isn't cheap, and so it's too bad it's missing a few "nice to have" features.

For one, there's no local (or cloud) storage, and so you can't capture something your baby or toddler is doing or saying to enjoy again later or share with grandparents. Other monitors let you do that.

The cameras do not support color night vision, as many others do, such as the LeapFrog LF920HD Color Night Vision Video Monitor with 7-Inch HD Display.

There's no option to play music (like lullabies) or white noise.

And, since it's not on your Wi-Fi, which might be better from a privacy standpoint, there is no app support to see your little one(s) on your smartphone—even when you're not at home. Yes, "date night" shouldn't include peeking at your kids, perhaps, but some parents like the peace of mind of looking at their sleeping kids while in between courses at a restaurant.

Finally, some monitors have advanced features that the Vava does not, such as automatically snapping photos or recording videos when the child is smiling or laughing (using AI); Alexa or Google support (use your voice to ask for a live camera feed on your TV, smart display, and other devices); or camera interaction with baby toys (like the Pixsee models offer).

Should you buy the Vava Baby Monitor with Split Screen?

Yes, if you have two or more kids and live in a smaller-sized home

Because of its super simple setup and dual-camera/split-screen support, the Vava Baby Monitor with Split Screen is great for parents with more than one young child.

It enjoys long battery life, an intuitive interface, vava split screen baby monitor reviews video and audio, and several options in which to see and hear your kids when unable to be in the same room with them.

Because the range was decent but not great, this isn't ideal for those with larger homes (or perhaps homes with concrete walls), nor would this product be a good solution for those who want 2005 toyota prius water vave see their kids on an app.

Our Hands-on Review of the VAVA Baby Monitor Baby Monitor

I felt confident with my VAVA camera as soon as I opened its box. The unpacking experience feels surprisingly premium for a budget baby monitor. It immediately feels like a quality product that was designed with care vave p20 pro price attention.

That’s not something I say very often about a baby camera.

The VAVA works as soon as you plug in the camera and turn on the parent monitor. There is no complicated setup to do. The picture quality is excellent for a radio monitor at 720p and the 5” display is clear and sharp.

If I didn’t know its price, I would have thought that this was a more expensive baby monitor. I think that’s the best compliment we can give to VAVA.

It’s not all perfect, however. There are two things that I wish were there.

First, there is no option to play lullabies on the camera. I don’t necessarily consider this to be a must, but it certainly is a good addition to any baby monitor. And since most of the other monitors that we review have that option, I’ve come to expect it. The Eufy SpaceView, for example, comes with vava split screen baby monitor reviews selection of five lullabies and an excellent sound quality.

It has become a routine with my one-year-old baby girl to put her to bed with a lullaby playing on the Eufy monitor. I did the same thing with our son when he was younger too. The soothing sound helps them fall asleep.

Is it worth paying a little extra to have that option, that’s entirely up to you. You can easily play a lullaby from another device in your baby’s bedroom if you want. But I find it useful.

The second thing that I find missing in the VAVA is the existence of volume buttons on the parent monitor. To adjust the volume on the parent monitor, you have to turn on the screen, open the menu, and navigate to the volume options. That’s more complicated than it should be for something so basic. Most of the other vava split screen baby monitor reviews simply have a volume up and volume down button on the side of the parent unit.

Again, it might not be a big deal to vav bundle. It depends on how you’re using the monitor really. But for me, I like to have the volume fairly high when I’m in the living room having dinner or watching dragon face xray and vav movie, for example. And I would then lower the volume to its minimum once I go to bed. I change the volume regularly, so I find it a bit tedious to have to go through the menu each time.
