Before setting out to create a dash camera, VAVA asked consumers what they would like in the perfect camera. The result of that feedback comes in the form of the VAVA Dash, which was launched as a Kickstarter campaign in January 2017. VAVA director Jeh Lin said that the company utilized the Kickstarter platform because it “loves the instant community feedback and suggestions on new features.” The campaign currently has over $200K in backing; we got an early example of the Dash to see what makes this camera so special.

Unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, the team at VAVA is an established business with popular products like the VAVA Voom Bluetooth speaker. The Vava Dash Cam VA-CD001 is a 2017 dashboard camera with a unique design that we found to be quite attractive. The camera itself is round (cylindrical, to be precise). You access the app’s functions by logging onto the Vava Dash Cam’s Wi-Fi hotspot with your phone, then connecting via the app.
Performance
By default, the Vava Dash Cam records continuously, writing over the oldest material when required. However, it will save videos you initiate manually, as well as incident videos triggered by its G-sensor (if you hit something, or something hits you). The only hitch we encountered out of the box was that the G-sensor was set a bit too sensitive for the somewhat harsh road/track suspension in our test vehicle. IDGArchived or no, the quality of the Vava Dash Cam’s 60-frames-per-second, 1080p video is impressive. Daytime video is a bit darker than others we’ve seen, and not as color-saturated, but it is sharp and smooth. The camera was mounted a bit low in our test vehicle, picking up some of the black dashboard and affecting the brightness slightly. (Note: If you’re wondering why the car’s speed is shown in km/h, it’s because we didn’t bother to change it to MPH, though it’s also available.)

If you have the emergency sensor set up, the emergency videos are separated from the regular loops. While this seems convenient, it makes it hard to find a specific video slightly difficult because they are separated into two tabs. I would have preferred all videos to be together and emergency videos to have a lock symbol for the emergency videos.
When it comes to the quality of the video, I was very impressed. The videos are very clear and flow very smoothly. My favorite thing about the VAVA camera is that it has a wide angel and covers all lanes while driving. Audio is also clear on the videos. Compared to other dash cams I have had in the past, the VAVA has had the widest angle view covering many lanes of traffic. To me, this is one of the most important functions of a dash cam. I want my dash cam to cover as much as I can see with my own eyes, and VAVA does a great vava dashcam mount at accomplishing that. Overall, I would recommend the VAVA dash cam to anyone interested in purchasing it.
