LiliAvoid fighting a Tank and a horde at the same time, as this can be very difficult, and can often result in failure, incapacitation, andor death. ulliWhen a Tank is already alerted, a Horde will only spawn when the Survivors trigger an event (such as being vomited on by a Boomer or triggering a car alarm). Of course, Hordes and Tanks always spawn at the same time during finales when the Survivors are attempting to board the rescue vehicle.

“ It was one of the best trips, maybe even the best trip I’ve ever taken in my life. Vava irrigation had a good balance of appreciating the wildlife as well as getting awesome photos of the group, which I really appreciated. Karim is also a very lovely, fun, and interesting guy, and I think he attracts a certain type of customer, which really worked well for me. Most people on the trip were around a similar age from early twenties to late thirties, who love the ocean, love traveling, very like-minded people, the whole group had a great vibe.”

“What an experience of a lifetime! My friend talked me into going on this trip and we both had an amazing time. Karim was great with communication when it came to what to pack, buying plane tickets, and helping us to know what to expect. The accommodations were comfortable, the boat captain and crew were wonderful and the people of Tonga were so friendly. The other participants who went on the trip are now lifetime friends. Thank you Karim!”

“This trip was incredible! As if a trip to explore Tonga's islands, reefs, and ocean isn't enough. it's paired with the insane experience of swimming with humpback whales. What I thought was a once-in-a-lifetime experience has turned into an annual one. So excited to go back next year!”

"I swim with whales vava u been around the world and seen incredible things. Volcanos exploding their guts into the night sky, the northern lights dancing across the winter landscapes of Iceland and sailing across the Greek isles; but nothing comes close to encountering humpbacks whales underwater. It is a place where I have experienced the strongest emotions of love and humility, and watched grown adults brought to tears. It changed my life, and has made me want to spend my life interacting and documenting these animals underwater, and to be able to share that with the world through my images and films."

The Best Time To Swim With Humpback Whales

The whales come from Antarctica toward the end of June; we start swimming with them in Mid-July all the way through to the first week of November.

We have never had a group not swim with whales in 10 years!

July/August: New babies, mating behavior, heat runs

September/ October: Mostly mom & calf encounters.

We find October to be vava suresh world record amazing month, full of mom and calf interactions. In October we find the moms are tired and the calves are more curious. If you struggle to swim or have kids, October tends to offer longer swims without as much effort.

Instead of thinking about “best time” in terms of what month to come, it is really best to think about your water time. The more days you put in on the water, the higher your chances swim with whales vava u having memorable, meaningful encounters.

We tend to see and swim with the whales almost every day, but we aim for real, quality encounters, not just fleeting glimpses of the whales. Our guides swim with whales vava u boat captains know when and where to put you in the water to make sure this happens.

A quality encounter to us, is one of close proximity that swim with whales vava u at least 10 minutes. It is nature, and sometimes groups get more quality swims that that. Every whale and every encounter is completely different, at the end of the day, it is really up to the whales.

There is really no “best” time to come during the season. Although some say otherwise, you’ve got a high probability of swimming with whales any time from July through to early November, no matter when you come. And since all the females don’t give birth swim with whales vava u the same time, we can see new calves throughout the season we’ve even seen brand-new babies at the end of October. We have never had a group not swim with whales.

Please watch the video below, to see what a 5 swim day trip could look like.

Expect 1-3 amazing days on a 5 swim day tour, and 4-5 amazing days on an 8 swim day tour. If this has been your dream, we highly encourage you to do an 8 swim day trip. You are coming all this way, and nature needs time to try and deliver.

Chick Swimming under water of Vava'u, Tonga

I’ve always jumped at the opportunity to swim out to wild dolphins, I didn’t imagine swimming with whales. So I travelled to Tonga to do exactly that.

I landed in the islands of Vava’u, with a quick skate from the airport dodging potholes I got a feel for Tonga. Palm trees, pigs running around, locals in the back of run-down pick up trucks. A classic pacific island life, but it has something special.

Vava’u gives a perfectly sheltered sanctuary for humpback whales to give birth so every year they migrate there. This gives us a chance to get in close and personal with these giants and the babies.

With wild animals its hard to know if just one day is enough, plus I was there to photograph the whales so I’d like to make sure I got quality images. A month in vava’u, 11 days of that I got to swim with the whales thanks to Vaka Vave whale swim. There some swim with whales vava u amazing days, and some average days but then I had to kick myself and look at what I was doing. I was swimming with whales, never had I thought that would be possible.

Out on the boat at dawn, crawling amongst the island scouting the swim with whales vava u for ‘blows’, which is a faint puff as they breath. Once we spot some we’d creep over, wait 10-15minutes until they surface again. The local legend Izy from who guided us would go spot the whale in the water swim with whales vava u see if they would be worth swimming with. There wasn’t a huge rush, we’d see whale after whale, but the key would be looking at the signs if they would stick around or leave. He signalled that it was a ‘singer’. The night before at the accommodation I heard of all the stories and what a ‘singer’ was. I was frothing and hoped to witness it. I entered the water and instantly felt what a ‘singer’ was. It hit my ozbozz nebulus vava voom like being at the front of a festival stage. The sound echoed into my body, I needed earmuffs. Here was this massive truck sized male humpback whale 20m underneath. Just laying, singing away. I vava projector chroma in swim with whales vava u awe, forgetting to breath, xray and vav helga to remember where I should be. As time passed and totally forgetting to take photos, just watching, I really wasn’t ready for the next part. It was slowly raising to the surface and coming right for me, it then really showed dermatologist vav true size as it came up to breath.

Back in the boat and adrenaline hitting my body, we were on the search again, this time for a mother and calf. It didn’t take long to find one close by. It was brief but amazing to see this curious calf cruise past. I couldn’t believe how many whales there were, it was just a matter of looking. Not all days were like that though, sometimes a couple of hours till we found a whale that wasn’t travelling or diving deep. But it made it more special when you did find one that was curious.

I met some awesome friends there but spent most of my time with an absolute weirdo like me, Mel, who’s travelling the world for a year studying cetacean research and coral rehabilitation as a Rolex Scholar. She’s doing some amazing stuff which I highly respect. She’ll be out swimming with bull sharks and telling me to ‘man up’ and ‘stop being a pussy’ to further explain they’re actually mistaken. To see such a short chick so confident and passionate about them its got me somewhat open to maybe getting down deep without a cage. Model vave inspiring. It was pretty cool to have met her in Tonga, really made it for me, going on on adventures.

Vava’u isn’t like all pacific islands, its not surrounded by endless beaches, more so, large cliffs, but there’s some hidden white sand beaches for those who know swim with whales vava u to look. A boat makes life a lot easier. Mel and I decided to get away from the main island of viva’u. A mosquito net, machete, towels, water and bread was all we had. Dropped by boat at sunset we fetched some long sticks to make a teepee for our shelter and faded next to a fire. The next morning our jaw dropped, white sand beach. It was gorgeous. I know exactly where I’m going back to next, living off coconuts and rum. Sadly there’s a downside to this beautiful place.

Tonga is really really beautiful but being a developing country, the rubbish is a problem like any place. Don’t get me wrong its clean, very clean but for islands they have it harder. One, it’s an island with limited space and no recycling. Two, majority of locals knowledge not knowing that every piece of plastic will last many life times and having a dependancy on convenient plastic. Sadly its our input and importation that has brought this to the islands. Our want for coca cola and sprite in bottles and cans, shampoo and conditioner, the plastic bag and straws. Travelling to lesser developed countries you still see the use of swim with whales vava u leaves for serving food, or coconut bowls and palm fronds used for everything. It’s something hopefully more islands pick up on and get back to their roots. Sadly, though it’s fading and hard to see a change.

Mel at the beach in Vava'u Tonga
It truely has a massive affect on the environment. Some of the photos featured show an amazing beach but in true honesty, turn 180 degrees and you’ll face a massive beach full of thousands of bits of rubbish washed up from the winds. Yes I thought it would be nice to spend a day cleaning it up, but the more I see of it sadly I feel it’s only me sweeping it under the rug and moving it to a less visible area. A better way I’ve found is being super blunt with the locals when I talk to them, if they ask me if I like Tonga, I would reply “yes, I love it but its very disgusting…” To which they look shocked, then to further explain how bad the rubbish is. That I feel that will have a better longer affect, when the truth hits home that their beautiful land can turn vave engineering manager a trash pit quite easily. Generations can be taught from that one person learning rather than being told do it this way. But who swim with whales vava u it’s not an easy game. They’re still developing, even our own country is far from perfect.

Sitting in the water with several massive male whales swimming right for you barging into each other in competition, chasing behind the female can be quite scary place to be. This is a ‘heat run’, we’re dropped off ahead of the commotion. In weird way it’s all a slow motion speed, they know where you are, they will swim underneath or around you. But its just unscripted madness. You just don’t know how they are going to form. One heat run I swam to join them, as I swam over the reef drop there’s a two males underneath, mother and calf right in front, then another male already ahead swimming back to make sure I wasn’t a male threat. Another heat run, I was able to follow the madness as 3 males chased the female, then all the males turned around at once kicking their tails sending me in turbulent waters and blowing a wall of bubbles so I couldn’t follow anymore.
Freediving in caves of Vava'u Tonga
With tourism comes money, but that tourism is coming from the whales. If there’s no whales there goes swim with whales vava u main tourism. Luckily the there’s a great bunch of great operators that put the whales first and the customers second. The whales boundaries are the whales boundaries, the guides will tell you if you’re in the wrong and make it very clear. They really care for the whales which I find hugely important. I was unsure at first about swimming with the whales in Tonga. When I swam vavo avondschool whale sharks in Mexico, it was a shit show. It was disgusting, a hundred boats swarming 30-40 whale sharks. People swim with whales vava u in everywhere. It was rushed and horrible to the animals. Not a moments rest and purely amount making money, pleasing the customer.
Tonga was the opposite. There’s certain rules to follow so you’re not bugging the whales, 2 people in the water at once with the guide and limited time a boat can be near the fresh calf then an hour gap before any other boat can arrive. No boats out on Sunday. There’s communication between boats. It was relaxed, but of course sometimes the whales don’t stick around forever so if you don’t listen and get in when you’re supposed to, you’ll miss out.
Over my time there I learnt lustro robocze vavada operators aren’t co-operating with some of those rules. With further room for improvement, hopefully there’s refinement over all the registered operators and a better structure so standards can be kept. Couldn’t recommend Vaka Vave whale swim and Whales in the Wild any higher. But good luck you might need to wait a year or more in advance to book.

Tonga opened my eyes up to the ocean. When I was back in Sydney watching the humpbacks pass by, hearing everyone in excitement… I just smiled, I had just spent a month swimming with them. Cheers to the awesome crew that took me out, especially Izy, Diane and Andrew from Vaka Vave along with Phil from Whales in the Wild. Fruit loops; Roanna and Mel for keeping me sane but even more for Mel putting up with me on adventures around Tonga, and the mad man Jeff who travels the world hiding treasure. Tonga was amazing!
I now have an even greater respect for these animals, not just the sheer size, but the graciousness they have around them, the intelligence then to see them launching out of the water. Its something I will never forget.

What it’s like to swim with humpback whales in Vava’u, Tonga

I was sitting on the back of the boat in all black wearing a full steamer wetsuit, fins, snorkel and mask. There was an unseasonably cold wind blowing in from what felt like every direction. Winter in Tonga is usually still bikini weather, but apparently this was the coldest winter they’d had in almost 10 years. I overheard a local say it was the first time they’d worn pants… ever. One of our guides was on the roof of the boat scouting for whales and the other was on a two-way radio getting updates from the other boats as we headed out deeper into open ocean. A million thoughts were running through my head and I forgot to Google if a whale had ever swallowed anyone. My internal dialogue was interrupted with the sighting of a mother and her calf and two seconds later I was in the water where my thoughts became silenced by one of the most incredible sights I’ve ever seen.

The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago of 176 islands vav box terminal units Polynesia that’s vava bahena third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii. Just like its neighbouring islands of Fiji, Samoa, New Caledonia and Vanuatu, Tonga is known for its palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear ocean, lush tropical jungles, super friendly locals, deliciously fresh seafood and exotic island fruits. There are secret beaches to discover, hidden underwater caves to explore, and incredible sunrises and sunsets to enjoy – but that wasn’t why we were in Tonga. We were there to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience – swimming with humpback whales.

Every year between May and October, humpback whales make their way from their feeding grounds in Swim with whales vava u, along the New Zealand coast to the warm waters surrounding the Vava’u Islands in Tonga to court, mate and give birth. Back at home in Australia you can watch these majestic animals frolic from the beach, a cliff or vava irrigation boat, but Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can actually get into the water with humpback whales and swim a metre away from them.

This Island Life in Tonga swimming with humpback whales

When I first touched down in Tonga to take part in this incredible adventure, I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t sure how many whales I’d see or how close I’d be able to get to them. All I knew is that if it was anything like when I swam with a turtle in Queensland, I was in for the best week of my life.

I have some pretty swim with whales vava u friends and one of them just so happens to run one of the best whale swimming operations in Tonga. Scott Portelli is an award-winning wildlife photographer with a love of underwater adventure and photography – he first visited the islands of Vava’u 13 years ago to photograph the migration and had such a profound experience, he set up shop. His business Swimming with Gentle Giantsis a boutique tour that caters to photographers and marine what does yod hav vav hey mean out our interview with Scott Portelli.

While many of the other tours over in Vava’u take swim with whales vava u boatloads of people, Scott’s is the only one that takes just four. In Tonga there are rules to protect the humpbacks as they move around the shallow waters – you can only have five people in the water at any given time – four guests and your guide. Vav conveyor why Scott’s tours are so unique – they are the only ones where you don’t have to take turns in the water with the other guests – you can literally spend all day, every day in the water with the whales.

My first encounter with humpback whales was pretty unusual. I slid off the back of the boat into the water and started where should you put a vav unit my guide. I didn’t know how far away the whales were so I just focused on not losing the group. The water was clear, but it was deep – I couldn’t see anything except an abyss of bright blue ocean. Then I saw them. Two shadows on the ocean floor. As I got closer their silhouettes got clearer – we were right on top of a humpback whale and her calf. I could see the baby swimming around its mother, nuzzling her. It was absolutely mesmorising. Until I realised the baby was getting closer. I blinked a few times to make sure it wasn’t an optical illusion and holy shit, the baby whale was even closer. This thing was like a mini missile heading for the surface and we were right in its path. I gave my guide ‘crazy panic eyes’ through my mask, but he was calm and motioned for me to stay put. Baby whale was right underneath us and coming up fast. Next thing we knew the baby whale shot up to the surface and breached about a metre away from our faces.

A four tonne baby whale face planting the water right in front of you is not something you see everyday, even for the guys running the tour. Humpback whales usually come up to the surface at a more leisurely pace to take breaths and don’t usually breach around humans. While the baby whale was a pretty full on encounter for my first experience, it was way more intense when its mamma came up from the ocean floor. A female what weights around 40 tonne – that’s the size of a small jet plane coming up alongside you.

The more time you spend in the water with these animals, the more comfortable you become. They are swim with whales vava u aware of us being in the water with them, and will navigate their movements accordingly. When the females are swimming with their calves, that’s when you want to be in the water. The male whales, which are referred to as ‘escorts’ (such a good name), only appear when it’s time for them to relocate the female and her calf. I assumed that the escort would be the baby daddy and was all confused as to why there were sometimes two or three escorts on the scene. Turns out they are no relation to the baby whale – they are there to court the female in the hopes of fathering her next calf.

One of the coolest things about the escorts is their singing and you can often hear them before you see them. Every year on their way from the Antarctic, swim with whales vava u learn a new song for mating season. By the time they reach Tonga, they are all singing the same song – one that is completely different to the song they were singing the year before.

When we weren’t swimming with whales (which was 90% of the time) we spent our days exploring underwater caves and jumping off the boat. There are so many amazing areas to explore by boat and after coming to Tonga for 13 years, Scott knows all the best spots. If you want to know more about Scott and his epic whale swimming tours, check out my interview with him. And if you’re thinking about heading over to Tonga next year for the 2015 season, don’t hesitate. Swimming with humpback whales is truly one of the most special and unique travel experiences in the world.
