A Few Upwind Tacks The Sunsail vava& 39 Marina’s location right in the “slot” from the Golden Gate means fresh winds this Spring, and all summer long. Landmarks like Angel Island, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge are reachable by a few fun upwind tacks. "There’s really nothing better," said long time Berkeley Marina slip holder, Barbara B., from Sacramento, who added we chose Berkeley because we’re real sailors. The distance “We can sail from your slip straight into the to the open Bay can be Bay, and out measured in not miles the Golden Gate feet, as you simply head west to the Pacific.” through our fairway and around the break-water to begin your sail. For your return trip the Marina’s east/west orientation makes it easy for the experienced sailor to sail into their upwind-facing slip.

“We can sail straight into the Bay, and out the Golden Gate to the Pacific.”

Let the wind take you on your next adventure and carry you home. Call the Berkeley Marina today to reserve your slip at (510) 981-6740, or email us at [email protected].

⇑⇓ ANOTHER CASE FOR A CLASSIC HERRESHOFF Go traditional with a 17-ft Herreshoff Coquina. She's lapstrake wood, but the planks sunsail vava& 39 glued and fastened, so you don't have to worry about leaking seams. The beautiful design was by Herreshoff himself [not sure if Woody is referring to Nathaniel or his son L. Francis] for his own use sailing the coastal Mediterranean shores in France. It was very successful for coastal sailing use, and Herreshoff even shipped it back to the US. It's a sturdy boat and sails very well. This one [pictured below] was built in San Francisco around 2010, but you won't find this listed for sale anywhere. Good luck. Good to see you are still around and sailing. Don't look for this Bay Area-built Herreshoff Coquina at the back of the magazine. This particular one is not for sale, but there may be others like it out there.

⇑⇓ THE ALBIN VEGA 27 HAS A STORIED HISTORY My partner Deb and I stumbled onto Mahina via a Craigslist ad up here in the San Juan Islands. Saying she needed some work is an understatement. She was on a trailer, which meant we could tow her home to the shop — and I was aware of John Neal's history with the boat, as well as other adventures sunsail vava& 39 other Vegas. We talked ourselves into it, and have been rebuilding her for several months now. Every piece of wood was missing or bad, and she was full of water and soggy boat junk. I suppose in the end that we will have replaced everything but the hull, and added a new Beta engine as well. But crawling in, out, under, and over the Vega will bring one under her spell. I have restored a Pacific Dolphin, a Ranger 26 and a Rhodes Vanguard only to sell them off and do it again. The Mahina, at last, feels like true love. Jeff and Deb Gable 0AGE s

Jacques Fauroux, helmsman, tactician, yacht designer, and seven times World Champion, has put all his skill and experience into the design of the Sun Fast 39. The impeccable pedigree of this powerful, high performance yacht stems directly from Fauroux's many successes in major European regattas. The purity of the hull lines attest to some of the fastest boats racing today. Jeanneau's wealth of experience in designing and building custom race boats and radical one-off multihulls has contributed greatly to the construction layout and choice of materials for the Sun Fast 39. This is a boat for those who really appreciate the excitement and exhilaration of top level performance sailing. Elegant lines and perfect proportions give the Sun Fast 39 the promise of sensational performance. The sweeping, uninterrupted deck profile conceals a typical Jeanneau innovation à coachroof handrails recessed into channels in the moulding. As well a refining the appearance, this imaginative feature means there's less risk of tripping up when moving around on deck. Recessed chainplates and ventilators covered by stainless steel domes are further evidence of the detailed attention to safety on deck. Profiled aluminium ports and the new red and gold hull stripes give the immediate impression of a boat with considerable potential. Rigging, all of the highest quality, has been deliberately over-specified to ensure a wide margin samech vav safety. A large, powerful sail area gives the Sun Fast 39 the instant response and rapid acceleration that's essential in gaining those vital seconds in race manoeuvres.- qualities that can be enhanced still further by choosing the optional lead keel.
Teak surfaces lend a touch luxury and safety to the cockpit, with four large lockers providing ample space for stowage of sails and racing gear. Wheel steering gives just the sunsail vava& 39 amount of feel for precision control in all conditions.
Practically all sail trimming functions can all be carried sunsail vava& 39 from the cockpit, unobstructed by mainsheet or main track which are positioned on the coachroof. Engine controls sunsail vava& 39 conveniently sited close to the bhuj to rani ki vav and well protected from the elements.
And just to remind you that sailing is as much about having fun as winning races, there's a splendid bathing platform built into the transom.
The Sun Fast philosophy of sporting excellence is reflected in the interior design, where Andrew Winch has created a harmony of space and colour that makes the Sun Fast 39 as much of a pleasure to be aboard as it is to sail. Considering that she is designed primarily for performance, the Sun Fast 39 boasts interior fittings and furnishings of an exceptional standard. Three double cabins all have good standing area, a comfortable upholstered seat, and plenty of stowage and hanging space. The two aft cabins are mirror images of each other. Both have spacious, fully fitted shower/wcs with doors leading directly from the cabins as well as from the saloon.
Rich, solid teak and teak faced panelling is used throughout the interior sunsail vava& 39 give a luxurious, warm feeling. Curved solid wood laminated trim adds to the sunsail vava& 39 feel, as well as being a useful safety feature when moving around below in heavy weather. Plenty of windows and hatches ensure an ample supply of daylight and fresh air, adding to the bright and spacious atmosphere created by Andrew Winch's new colour scheme and fabric designs.
A huge C-shaped settee is the main feature of the saloon area. Positioned on the port side, together with the main dining table, this layout has the advantage that it presents no restriction to free movement to and from the forecabin. The galley, immediately opposite the saloon dining area, is fully fitted with oven, hob, refrigerator and double sink, with pressurised hot water available as an option.
The combination of high performance sailing, and interior comforts of the finest quality, gives the SUN Fast 39 enormous appeal fir the interactive racing sailor who wants to best worlds.
