No heat in vav/

Underheated VAV with No reheat

I am currently investigating the potential savings of using a small scale VAV system for single family homes. The intent is to compare two models:

  • The baseline model uses central heating and cooling and supplies air at constant volume. The HVAC system is controlled by a single thermostat.
  • The proposed model uses the same heating and cooling systems, but supplies varying amounts of air to the spaces based on individual thermostats placed in each room. For this reason, the model is multizonal, even though it's a single family home. No terminal units are used for reheating before air enters the individual spaces.

I am using eQuest to compare the two scenarios but am already having trouble with unmet load hours for the baseline model. My current set up on the Air Side is a single VAV system serving multiple zones. The VAV system uses a chilled water loop for cooling and a boiler for heating. Zone heat source is not installed because no terminal reheating is provided. The baseline model is underheated for around 5000 hours. I am no heat in vav eQuest autosize the heating capacity, but it sizes to 0. Looking at other threads, I've tried setting the hot deck temperature to 65 but the heating capacity is still 0. I’ve also increased the throttling range to 6 degrees but this only reduces a small amount of the underheated hours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

VAV electric reheat not working

VAV electric reheat not working

MechEngNCPE(Mechanical)

(OP)

Hey guys, just got a call that the reheat coils for a job we did are not working (when thermostat set higher, heaters not kicking in).  Now these are five 8" titus single duct boxes with 2kw heaters.  The heating cfm's range from 90-120cfm.  I think that they are heating the air too high and tripping a high no heat in vav cutout.  I did the calcs and the 90 cfm minimum box would heat the air to 122 deg, when I want it around 95.  I am thinking that they can adjust the minimum damper position for heating mode.  Is this correct?  I will bump the minimum up to around 200 no heat in vav of course after we check that no heat in vav thermostats are hooked up and everything electrically is in order.

Am I right?

Air System Basics: VAV

Heating, Ventilating, heating coil vav Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems play a large role no heat in vav the successful operation of a facility. They are responsible for maintaining comfort conditions day in and day out. These systems, often very large and energy-consuming, are responsible for a large portion of a building’s first cost and operating cost. It is, therefore, very important to have HVAC systems designed, maintained, and operated properly. If they are taken for granted and neglected, comfort conditions can be lost and they can become even bigger energy consumers.

Because buildings vary, it is very important to no heat in vav a system that is “right” for the facility. Many different HVAC systems are available today, but most of the new designs utilize heated and cooled air as the medium for environmental control. The Variable Air Volume (VAV) system, which varies the volume of delivered air to control room no heat in vav as opposed to varying the temperature, is the most widely used no heat in vav system on the market today.

Variable Air Volume Systems

When it comes to choosing a VAV system, there are several options: the basic shut-off system, the reheat system, the parallel fan powered system, and the series fan powered system. In all of these systems, the temperature of the air leaving the air handler is usually maintained at no heat in vav constant 55oF throughout the year. Each room can have its own air volume controller, making it possible for every room supplied by the air handler to have independent temperature control even though the temperature leaving the air handling unit does not change.

These systems may also have a heating coil, installed in no heat in vav air handler, that can be used to maintain a reduced temperature during periods when the building is unoccupied. This reduced temperature is normally maintained somewhere between 55oF and 65oF. This feature no heat in vav only saves the energy required to heat the facility to a higher temperature but, if the fan is only run when heat is required, also saves fan energy. This same unit-mounted heating coil can be used for morning warm-up. At night and during the warm-up cycle the variable air volume boxes are normally maintained no heat in vav the full open position heating coil vav allow full airflow to spaces. During this mode the system is operating much like a simple single zone system.

Shut-Off VAV

These systems no heat in vav used for cooling purposes in applications having a year-round cooling load. The volume of the 55oF air is reduced as the cooling load goes down. Since there is no reheat coil, shut-off VAV systems do not provide heating capability during periods when the building is occupied. The VAV box is usually allowed to reduce the airflow to zero during periods of no cooling load. This has the potential to cause indoor air quality problems and, therefore, should be evaluated closely during system design.

Terminal Reheat VAV

Similar to simple shut-off system, upon a fall in space temperature, VAV systems with terminal reheat reduce the volume no heat in vav the air to the space. However, once a predetermined minimum airflow is reached, heat is added to the air prior to delivery to the space. Since the air is never reduced to zero, ventilation can be maintained. This reduces the possibility of indoor air quality problems.

Parallel Fan-Powered VAV

In these systems, a fan-powered variable air volume box reduces the volume of the primary 55oF air no heat in vav if the space requires additional heat, the fan in the box is energized. This allows any warm air above the ceiling to be used to heat the space. If this does not adequately heat the area, no heat in vav heating coil in the box is energized to provide the required heat. This system is designed to power the fan only when heat is required. Running the fan when heat no heat in vav required keeps the room air exchange rate constant and at a sufficient volume to maintain good air circulation. With the Reheat VAV system, the air exchange rate during the heating mode can be reduced substantially over vava e gugu achieved during the cooling mode.

Series Fan-Powered VAV

The series fan-powered variable air volume box operates much like the parallel box except the fan runs in both the heating and cooling modes. This provides a constant volume of air at all times, even though the box is varying the volume of the primary 55oF supplied by the air handler. Series fan-powered boxes are typically used in low temperature ice storage applications where the air leaving the air handler is maintained at temperatures below the normal 55oF. This ensures that the air entering the room is still at 55oF even though the primary air stream might be no heat in vav colder.

Advantages of VAV Systems:

• Relatively inexpensive individual room control
• Reduced operating costs
• Diversity of the building’s cooling and heating loads is reflected in the air handler and ductwork system. This allows the handler and ductwork to be smaller than required for a single zone system

Disadvantages of VAV Systems:

• Each terminal unit has an air valve and possibly a coil which require electrical and/or pneumatic service
• Requires the use of diffusers with proven distribution characteristics over a wide range of air flows
• Potential indoor air quality problems if proper precautions are not taken

VAV Systems no heat in vav Are they right for you?

Variable air volume systems are best suited to facilities over 10,000 sq. ft. that require individual room control and no heat in vav varying interior cooling loads that are large relative to the perimeter heating loads. Buildings with a central corridor and rooms with exterior exposures located no heat in vav both sides of the corridor (double loaded corridors) are usually not good applications for variable air volume.

Potential indoor air quality problems with these systems have heating coil vav a major design issue during the last several years. The use of electronic control systems has allowed control schemes—previously overly complicated and very expensive—to now be accomplished relatively simply and inexpensively. With proper design and installation, ventilation rates can be maintained to satisfy current codes and ASHRAE recommendations without sacrificing the energy benefits of the variable air volume system.

Hi folks,

We are modeling a large facility operating with multiple VAV AHUs with central heating and cooling coils, but vava wireless showing as re-heat at the zones. There are high heat loads in the spaces and therefore higher return air temperatures than the norm.

When I remove the re-heat from the systems I no heat in vav excessive unmet load hours (heating). I have specified "HEAT-SET-T" to activate the central heating coil. I also have cooling control set to "warmest" and heat control set no heat in vav "coldest". If I do not set the coil capacity it is still not meeting no heat in vav loads. The only way I have been able no heat in vav eliminate these unmet hours is by adding the re-heat back in or changing it to a multi-zone (MZS) system with all the same parameters.

If I model this scenario using the multi-zone system in eQuest to get around this would that be vastly different than VAV with no re-heat? Has anyone had this issue before? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

VAV Boxes

VAV Boxes are an HVAC Item that is relatively simple and yet so many get intimidated by what they are all about. In very simple terms buildings can have individual HVAC units in every space or have a central unit and allow a (VAV) “box” in every zone to maximize comfort and efficiency.

The simplest VAV Box is a damper, actuator and room controller (“thermostat”). VAV boxes can have post heating (never cooling) as an option. The last item regarding a type no heat in vav VAV box is fan powered box. More explanation below.

A VAV system typically will have a central unit deliver 55 F all year round. In the summer, most, if not all zones will call for cooling and the damper on each box will open, providing that 55 F air. If the zone is satisfied, it will close shut or go to a minimum position to allow a small amount of air to achieve the fresh air requirements being provided by the central HVAC unit. In the winter, for a simple box, the heat may be from within the space or provided by baseboard heat. In larger spaces a VAV box will have on board heat; this way zones calling for cooling get the 55 air and spaces requiring heat would heat the 55F to 95F (keep in mind that these situations are fall, spring and winter where the temperatures are below rani ki vav world heritage site so the compressor of the hvac units would be off). In spaces where there is an open return the ceiling plenum will collect all the internal heat of the building (people, lighting, office equipment, etc) and a fan powered VAV will mix this plenum air with HVAC air to provide heat. Fan powered VAV’s are seen on exterior zones where once the weather cools will require heat first despite interior zones still needing cooling. For another day, there are parallel fan powered boxes and series FPV. Similar in application, but operating differently, those fan powered units will have advantages and disadvantages.

Once the weather cools and the building has been unoccupied (overnight or the weekend), A VAV system will go into a morning warm up allowing a full blast of 95F air with all the VAV’s open to bring the building up to 70F. Once vavau vessel morning warmup sequence is complete the VAV system returns to its normal sequence.

One other items worth mentioning- in the summer, the space air is about 75 with 55; 20 delta; Winter the space is about 75 but the supply no heat in vav still 55, 40 delta. That being said, the heat cfm setting on a VAV box will typically be 50% of the cooling as a rule of thumb.

Another item worth mentioning- static pressure. Most boxes only require about no heat in vav or less pressure across the inlet to measure the air flow (static independent). Howe

Device which will control each zone actuator with or without auxiliary heat

ver, there is duct and outlets downstream of box to consider. The higher the static going across the box, the more noise you will see. Boxes have noise data based on radiated and discharge. Radiated is what you hear from the actual box from the outside. Discharge is the noise inside the box which will ultimately be heard through the air outlet.

How about controls? VAV Boxes can be controlled by a DDC controller which ties all the components of the HVAC system (AHU, VAV, Chiller, etc) or it can be standalone. On a DDC system, the VAVs communicate to allow the central HVAC unit to deliver the proper cfm and if applicable, reset (the ability vav rehaet coil sizing adjust the discharge to achieve maximum comfort and efficiency). The DDC system will also communicate the conditions to the VAV box so it can anticipate and operate best. On a standalone system, the VAV box will have an inlet probe for temperature and proof of air flow and will open and close based on what the room sensor reads. Vav svx08 central HVAC unit will have a pressure transducer which upon boxes closing will reduce the cfm independently as needed. The central HVAC unit can reduce the cfm by a VFD or in some cases a bypass which will no heat in vav a damper which will dump the supply air into the return or the plenum. The bypass will allow the compressors (or heater) to turn off or reduce, but the fan kw will remain the same.

Reading that last sentence there may be confusion with the bypass as there is another sequence that use VAV boxes known as VVT. VVT, or Variable Volume, Variable Temperature is a system where each VAV box will communicate to the central HVAC system if it needs heating or cooling and the HVAC unit will literally switch back and forth between heating and cooling, delivering 55F or 95F. VVT systems only use simple VAV boxes (or zone dampers which are similar) and do not have fan powered or post heating options.

Finally, finally, the last item worth mentioning is a thermal diffuser which is a combination of a VAV “box” and an air outlet. There is a passive type using a wax motor which will keep the air discharge constant based air in the duct and an active type which uses an actuator and a thermostat.
