This lightweight vac has an inbuilt hose that is sturdy and flexible and has a nozzle for getting into corners and narrower spaces.

It’s as quiet as a standard vacuum and lightweight, making it easy to carry around.

During testing, we used this model to clean up the wood floors and tiles in an apartment and the building’s laundry room, which had a lot of dirt, dust, and spills. After a full clean, the canister wasn’t even a quarter-way full.

Since this model doesn’t need a collection bag, all you have to do is simply empty out the canister when necessary.

We found that the vacuum can suck up a lot of water, but it won’t leave the area completely dry. Overall, this is a great pick if you need a dry vac for daily use, with the capacity to pick up occasional spills. There’s a large filter inside that’s simple to remove, but it takes up a good deal of space inside. However, the canister has plenty of room for debris.

The only downside to this model is that the nozzle doesn’t cover much ground, and an attachment with a wider head would be useful.

In addition, the battery takes a good couple of hours to fully charge up, but a full charge lasts 15–20 minutes—enough to clean up an average-sized apartment. 

If you have other Ryobi tools, a second battery would come in handy as you’d be able to clean a larger space while the other battery is on a charge, and swap them out when it runs out of juice.

Hard to go wrong with the DeWalt name and hard to find fault with this shop vac when it’s less than $80.

With a 5-gallon capacity, I found that it was much easier to maneuver than the top three picks on this list and felt more confident porting it around my shop.

Another shop vacuum with a rotating motion to prevent kinks, I was happy overall with this DeWalt shop vac. I think the lack of suction is negligible when accounting for price and size.

An extremely affordable option on our list, the workshop is lightweight (under 8 lb) and carries a 2.5-gallon capacity.

I always go for the big guns (see the best overall) but I get it: Not everyone needs commercial capability.

I’d define this shop vac as a great tool for those looking for something more heavy-duty than their stick vacuum but not needed in their garage; maybe their basement or indoor patio. I do want to note that there is onboard storage for accessories and attachments, which is key to a great shop vac.

The Ryobi 40V 10-gallon Cordless Wet/Dry Vacuum impressed us during our testing with its powerful suction and lightweight canister. With 45 minutes of runtime thanks to the 40V 4.0 Ah battery, we had plenty of time to suck up various debris from a car and a set of garage steps. If necessary, you can purchase separately the 40V 6.0 Ah battery and charger, which has a 60-minute max runtime. While we didn’t find the 45-minute runtime constraining, we recognized that this vacuum may not be ideal for a full day of cleaning at a job site. 

Its suction was also impressive and did not dull during our testing.

We really enjoyed using the squeegee attachment to easily pool spilled water for quick suction. The drainage port is flush with the bottom of the canister, so we could easily dump out all of the liquid at the end of our test.

While it’s not a major component of the vacuum’s operational capabilities, we were slightly concerned by this vacuum’s canister closure method. You have to squeeze the latches in order to release the top to dump the vacuum’s contents, and we felt that the latches could easily pinch tiny or distracted fingers.

We recommend being extra-cautious when opening the canister, to prevent this.

With 10 gallons of capacity and a lightweight canister, this vacuum is a great tool for anyone who already owns other tools from RYOBI’s 40V line or anyone who doesn’t want to be limited by the length of a power cord.

Since this vac is designed for connection directly on tools that make the dust and capture it at the source, the lack of additional nozzles and extensions may not be big deal. It has a high-quality HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorbing) cartridge style, and an ultra-fine filter rated to catch even the finest dust particles smaller than two microns. There’s also a felt-like collection bag to further help capture the debris. 

Dumping the tub is effortless, although there’s no water drain so you have to lift and tilt it to pour the water out. There’s ultrafine filtering to keep the dust trapped and the air clean, and a built-in power outlet that lets you plug in a compatible tool, like a sander, router, or circular saw. 

When you set the vac's power switch to the accessory setting and power up the tool, it automatically powers up the vac. After shutting the tool off,  we found that the vac continued to run for a further 15 seconds, clearing the hose of any dust remnants.
